All skin types are prone to dehydration.
Dehydrated skin is skin whose epidermis lacks water. It is a temporary condition and not a specific skin type like oily or dry skin. You can have dry or oily skin that is dehydrated.
It is important to distinguish between dehydrated skin and dry skin. Dry skin does not produce enough lipids. These lipids form what is known as the hydrolipidic film (protective barrier) on the skin’s surface.
Consequently, the clinical symptoms of dehydration include feelings of tightness, redness, dullness and discomfort, which in extreme cases can lead to the appearance of scabs. It also causes fine lines of dehydration across the entire skin.
→ Why does skin become dehydrated?
The skin’s water content is 70%. This water undergoes a natural evaporation process.
The hydrolipidic film acts as a « barrier » against external aggressions and also prevents water from evaporating. Furthermore, if this hydrolipidic film becomes weakened, water will evaporate, causing dehydration and leaving the skin dry and dehydrated.
→ What external factors can exacerbate this phenomenon of dehydration?
- – The sun’s UV rays remain the primary cause of dehydrated skin.
- – Repeated friction, whether from clothing or other sources, will weaken your skin.
- – Applying a skincare product or cream that is not suitable for your skin type.
- – The cold.
→ How can this be remedied?
Home care
- – Drink water: water is a constituent element of all our cells. The skin is composed of 70% water.
- – Cleanse your skin gently: choose a cleanser suited to your skin type to maintain your skin’s pH balance. Don’t forget to finish off your cleansing routine with a gentle lotion.
- – Moisturise your skin: choose cosmetics suited to your skin type: dry, oily or even sensitive.
- – Protect your skin: the key to longevity lies in protecting your skin from the elements, stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle (i.e. diet).
